1 Offers and suggestions

2 may, might, can, could: possibility in the future and present
Употребление модальных глаголов "may", "might", "can" и "could" в предположениях о том, что что-то может произойти в настоящем или будущем1)а) В утвердительных предложениях, выражающих предположение о том, что в настоящем или будущем что-то может происходить (произойти), используются глаголы may и might. Между may и might в этом случае практически нет разницы, однако, might выражает большую степень сомнения в возможности описываемого события.They might be walking in the garden now — Возможно, они сейчас прогуливаются в саду (но маловероятно).
б) С тем же значением предположения о возможности может употребляться глагол could, но не глагол can. could используется в случае, когда нет большой уверенности в том, что предположение является верным.Глагол could в данном значении используется по преимуществу в сочетании с глаголом be. Глагол be при этом может, в частности, являться составляющей Continuous infinitive или Simple infinitive passive (см. Infinitive 2б и 2д).Why is he upset? It may/might/could be because he lost his bag — Почему он расстроен? Может быть, потому, что он потерял свою сумку.
He may/might/could be waiting for us at the station — Возможно, он ждет нас на станции.
Do you think the plane will be on time? It may/might/could be delayed — Думаешь, самолет прилетит вовремя? - Возможно, он задержится.
в) Глагол can употребляется в утвердительных предложениях, если нужно выразить, что нечто возможно в принципе, а не применительно к данной частной ситуации. В официальном языке инструкций и предписаний can в таких случаях может заменяться на may.I wonder where Tom is. - He may/might/could/*can be at the library. — Интересно, где же Том. - Он может быть в библиотеке (в данном случае нельзя использовать глагол can)
2) В вопросах о возможности глагол may и might практически не используются. Вместо may и might можно использовать, например, could(n't) или выражение be likely.3)а) В отрицательных предложениях, в частности, в предложениях со словами only, hardly, never, для выражения невозможности используются can't (cannot) и could not (couldn't).There couldn't/can't be a connection between the two paragraphs — Не может быть никакой связи между этими двумя параграфами.
б) Разница между сочетаниями may not/ might not и can't/ couldn't состоит в следующем:may not/ might not указывает на возможность того, что нечто не является верным (may not/mightn't + A = возможно, не A).can't/ couldn't указывает на невозможность того, что нечто является верным (can't/couldn't + A = невозможно, чтобы A).4) При сообщении о событии, которое, возможно, произойдет в будущем к какому-то моменту времени, используется конструкция may/might + perf. infinitive (см. б) Конструкция can + perf. infinitive не используется в утвердительных предложениях.*

2) При описании события, которое могло бы произойти в прошлом, но в действительности не произошло, употребляется конструкция might/could + perf. infinitive (см. I went to bed? — Вы не будете возражать, если я пойду спать?2)б) Для выражения запрещения (а не просто отклонения просьбы) используется глагол must с отрицанием. О других способах выражения запрещения - см. Giving orders, 1.3)а) Чтобы передать в непрямой речи (см. Indirect speech), что некто дает или дал разрешение на что-либо, используются глаголы can (настоящее и будущее время) и could (прошедшее время).John says that we can stay at his house — Джон говорит, что мы можем остановиться у него.
б) Если в прямой речи сообщается, что нечто было разрешено в некоторой определенной ситуации, то можно употребить was/were allowed to, но не could. Если нечто было разрешено вообще, можно использовать глагол could и выражение was/were allowed to.I was allowed to come in — Мне разрешили войти (здесь употребление could невозможно).

7 can, could, be able to: ability
Употребление модальных глаголов can, could и модальной конструкции be able to для выражения способности или возможности1) Если нужно сообщить об умении, способности кого-либо делать что-то, можно использовать can для обозначения настоящего времени и could — для обозначения прошедшего времени. can и could можно заменить конструкцией be able to, однако, can и could употребляются чаще.He can ( is able to) speak ten languages — Он умеет (может) говорить на десяти языках.
He could ( was able to) swim when he was small — Он мог (умел) плавать, когда был маленьким.
2)а) Если речь идет о том, что кто-то сумел осуществить что-то в некоторой определенной ситуации в прошлом, используется конструкция be able to, could в этом случае не употребляется. Could чаще употребляется в том случае, когда речь идет о чьих-либо способностях и умениях.They didn't want to sell the house but we were able to persuade them — Они не хотели продавать дом, но мы сумели убедить их сделать это.
б) Сочетание can и could с глаголами чувственного восприятия feel - чувствовать, hear - слышать, see - видеть, smell - чувствовать запах, taste - пробовать на вкус, а также с глаголами believe - верить, decide - решать, remember - помнить, understand - понимать может иметь два значения: 1) возможность действия, а также 2) само это действие, реально происходившее в некоторый момент времени.I could see the mountains through the window — Я видел горы через окно (Через окно мне были видны горы).

3) Конструкция be able to не используется в следующих случаях:а) при описании события, происходящего в момент речиLook, I can swim! — Смотри, я плыву (у меня получается плавать)!

4) Конструкция be able to используется: перед инфинитивом с частицей to, перед Ing-form, перед глагольными формами, выражающими время группы Perfect, а также после модальных глаголов (Modal verbs). 8 Modal verbs
1) Глаголы can, may, ought (to), must, could, might, shall, should, will, would относятся к группе модальных вспомогательных глаголов.При этом глагол could является формой прошедшего времени глагола can, а глагол might является формой прошедшего времени глагола may. Однако сведений о том, как употребляются глаголы can и may недостаточно для того, чтобы правильно употреблять глаголы could и might. Глаголы could и might не всегда указывают на прошедшее время.Глаголы need и dare могут употребляться и как немодальные глаголы (о need см. needn't, don't need to, don't have to, mustn't).2) Модальные глаголы не употребляются самостоятельно, а только в сочетании с инфинитивом без частицы to (см.
